A broad range of materials
Shims form a range of purposes and the material that a shim is made from will depend on that intended purpose, as well as the location of the part and the environmental stresses that it will need to withstand. Internal or enclosed shims, for example, will have different requirements to shims which are exposed to high levels of humidity or UV light. When advising clients on the most appropriate product specifications and materials, Lamsco West, Inc’s skilled engineers and technicians consider all factors to ensure that clients have the best component parts to meet their needs.

Metal shims are a central part of aerospace engineering and are a good choice in situations where the shims will be exposed to UV light, as metals do not degrade as a result of UV exposure. Clients are able to choose from a broad selection of metals, including brass, beryllium copper, stainless steel, aluminum and titanium, as well as super alloys, such as Inconel. Each metal possesses advantages and disadvantages in terms of strength, durability, cost and weight, each of which will be considered by our technicians when advising a client.

The non-metallic shims in our portfolio include nylon polyimide, phenolic, carbon fiber, fiberglass and composites. Non-metals possess high compressive strength, are lightweight and often lower cost than metals, however, they cope less well than metal when exposed to extreme temperatures or UV light.
